Helpful Hints: Location and Construction

While some fountains can be powered by a solar panel, many have electricity delivered by a traditional wired supply. This is an important aspect of deciding where you’re going to place your selection.

Also look around and think about what leaf and yard debris might fall into the water and get caught up inside the drains.

Coleman 50-Foot 14/3 Extension Cord

It’s always best to hire a professional electrician for these kinds of jobs; they have the years of practice and firsthand knowledge of safety precautions that the internet can’t readily provide.

Electricity can be deadly, so always err on the side of safety!

If you’re using an extension cord and are not electing to bury conduit, be sure to purchase a reliable and high-quality extension cord.

Coleman makes a great product that I’ve employed for a variety of prolonged outdoor uses, and it’s available on Amazon.

Selecting the Right Option for Your Space

The type that you will select is an important choice, and there are three basic models: tabletop, wall-mounted, or freestanding.

While table fountains are shorter in stature, suited to fit on a table or a stand, wall types may be attached to a permanent wall. Freestanding models are taller and larger, designed to stand on level ground.

All varieties need to be level and secured firmly in place, and they all utilize some type of water pump.

Floor fountains can be large and hold a considerable quantity of water in their basins, so keep the safety of children and pets in mind!

Cleaning Tips

Far from a complicated topic, cleaning your fountain is as simple as using a few drops of dish soap and a soft brush once a week, or at whatever interval you find necessary to keep it clean.

Give the basin a nice wash, rinse it out, and refill.

Cleaning the pump (or filter, if applicable) can be a little more complicated. But these, too, are usually easy jobs once you get the hang of it.

Ensure that you’ve unplugged anything hooked to electricity before cleaning! Each pump will have cleaning instructions that are unique, if it needs cleaning at all.

EasyCare FounTec Algaecide and Clarifier, 8 Ounces

EasyCare FounTec Algaecide and Clarifier is available from Amazon.

Safe for plants, birds, and other wildlife, just a few drops added weekly will keep water clear, and free of algae and mosquitoes. This product is not safe for use near fish and should be kept out of reach of children.

Alternatively, try something like Barley Straw Extract to keep the water clean. You’ll find this readily available on Amazon as well.

Microbe Lift Barley Straw Concentrated Extract, 16 Ounces

Lastly, while it’s true that water features can be gorgeous pieces that tie together the entire yard, they really do require some maintenance and upkeep. I have a friend who has this fountain… well, he had this fountain…

… aaaaand that’s my attempt at a joke.

In all seriousness, like any garden project, this is a commitment. Like having a pool, or even a birdbath, regular upkeep is required to keep it in tip-top shape.

Check power lines, clean it regularly, perform any necessary maintenance, and you’ll be able to show your garden feature off to the neighbors for years to come.

Neglect it, and it’s sure to last only a season or two (which equals money down the leaf-clogged drain).

If possible, it is ideal to bring fountains indoors during winter months. If the piece is very large or heavy, at least cover it for protection from snow, ice, rain, and freezing temperatures.

The Perfect Water Feature

The presence of a fountain in a garden can fill any number of uses. It can be a subtle touch for the more reserved space or a loud-and-proud proclamation to draw the attention and ardor of your guests.

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that a good water feature can complete an outdoor space.

A close up horizontal image of a garden fountain in the front of a residence.

What’s more, a fountain can provide a more permanent addition to a garden than some plants and other features.

If you’re like me, then the initial construction will be a great memory to hold onto whenever you hear that bubbling water.

We’ve got plenty of different types of fountains for you to peruse and choose from; if there’s one you think we’re missing, give us a shout in the comments section below!

How To Winterize Your Outdoor Fountains

WinterizeFountains

Winterizing your outdoor fountains can prolong their life, especially here in Arkansas… You know, where we may have a cold winter, or we may not! So it’s a good idea to go ahead and follow these 5 steps when winterizing your outdoor fountains.

Step 1

You want to start by unplugging the pump to your fountain… water and electricity don’t mix well; so unplug and remove the pump for safe storing in the garage during the winter months.

FBH_9761

Step 2

Now it’s time to drain the fountain.  Depending on the size of your fountain, this part of the process can take a little longer.

FBH_9794

Step 3

After the fountain is all drained, you will need to use a mild detergent and scrub any remaining algae from the fountain.  The goal is to get it as clean as possible before winter weather arrives.  Go ahead and make sure you rinse the soap off really well.  Then, wait for the fountain to dry!FBH_9796

Step 4

Cover the fountain with clear painters plastic.  Why do we use clear plastic?  Because it allows sunshine to reach the fountain which prevents algae from growing.  You will want to secure the plastic with tape or tie it in place with rope.FBH_9800

Step 5

Very important last step… Make sure to poke a couple tiny holes in the plastic on each level of the fountain.  This is important so that the fountain can breathe a little and so air flow can allow moisture to escape.

Now that you know how to prepare fountains for winter, why not add a fountain to your landscape?!

Come see us  to pick out the perfect fountain for your yard!

Which Is Better: A Resin or Cement Fountain?

Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images

A fountain provides the sound of flowing water that many people find soothing and relaxing. Fountains are available in a choice of styles, designs and materials to add to your garden or landscape. Resin and concrete products offer homeowners a choice of fountains at a more affordable cost than the more expensive options of natural stone or metals. Resin and concrete fountains each have their own advantages to suit a wide range of tastes.

Fountains

Fountains are available in wall, tabletop or free-standing units, for use as an accent or focal point in a garden or landscape. Since the water recirculates in a continuous movement, it does not become stagnant or breed mosquitoes. The fountains are available in a variety of styles to complement your architectural design and style. Outdoor fountains are available in traditional tiered styles, with animals, cherubs, angels or children as accents, or in more contemporary geometric designs. The water may flow, bubble or spray, depending on the style you choose.

Resin Fountains

Resin is a lightweight engineered material that can be designed to have the appearance of concrete or stone. The material is easy to mold into a variety of detailed shapes and finishes for use on decks, porches or in gardens. Resin fountains withstand the weather well, but are best suited for climates that do not have hard winter freezes. Their light weight gives you the option of relocating the fountain if you redesign your space. Resin is a durable, long-lasting material that is more economical than other materials.

  • The material is easy to mold into a variety of detailed shapes and finishes for use on decks, porches or in gardens.

Concrete Fountains

Concrete fountains, sometimes referred to as cast stone, are made of white or gray cement that is poured into casts producing a wide range of designs and styles. The material can be finished to resemble natural stone. Although concrete is durable, it is susceptible to cracking and chipping from freezing and thawing. Concrete fountains are less expensive than natural stone products, but because of the expense of transporting them, may be more expensive than resin fountains.

Maintenance

Concrete fountains are subject to damage from rain and pollution. Apply a water sealer each year to protect the surface. Regular maintenance keeps both resin and concrete fountains in good condition. Check the water level regularly to prevent damage to your pump. Check the pump and change the water three or four times each year, or as the manufacturer recommends. Water from outdoor faucets is suitable for use in all outdoor fountains, but the addition of algaecide keeps the water fresh. In climates with hard freezes, both resin and concrete fountains are subject to damage. If possible, bring the fountains indoors for the winter. Resin fountains have an advantage in these climates since they are lightweight and portable. If possible, remove the bowl of a concrete fountain and turn it upside down or bring it indoors. Covering a concrete fountain with plastic will keep water out of the porous material and reduce the possibility of cracking from freezing temperatures. At the minimum, drain both resin and concrete fountains and remove the pumps.
