Mack Trucks delivers Mack LR Electric model to Republic Services to begin real-world trials

“Mack Trucks is extremely pleased that Republic’s very first fully electric refuse vehicle is the Mack LR Electric,” said Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of North American sales and commercial operations. “The LR Electric offers numerous benefits, including zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and quieter operation, and we look forward to partnering with Republic to meet their business needs through this fully electric truck.”

Republic Services is an industry leader in U.S. recycling and non-hazardous solid waste disposal. Republic will test the LR Electric model in Hickory, North Carolina on one of its residential recycling collection routes. The LR Electric will be evaluated for its range, functionality and payload capacity.

Featuring a fully electric integrated powertrain, the Republic Mack LR Electric is equipped with two electric motors with a combined output of 536 peak horsepower. The powertrain delivers 4,051 lb.-ft. of torque available from zero RPM, which is fed through a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission to Mack’s proprietary S462R 46,000-pound rear axles. Four NMC lithium-ion (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) batteries are charged via a 150kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. All accessories are electrically driven through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits.

The Republic LR Electric features Heil’s Command-SST, an automated side loader refuse body optimized for next generation electric collection trucks. The Command-SST features a strong, yet lightweight body that maximizes hauling capacity, without sacrificing performance. Its efficient hydraulic system only draws power when needed, helping extend battery life. A unique feature is the body-mounted ASL arm, which frees up frame rail space for batteries or other auxiliary components.

Identified by a copper Bulldog to signify its fully electric powertrain, the LR Electric will be built at the Mack Trucks Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania, where all Class 8 Mack Trucks for North America and export are assembled.

Equipment bodies from various manufacturers are available for the LR Electric, enabling customers to specify the truck to their unique application. Options include the same driver/passenger-side driving configurations, door selections and seating choices as the diesel-powered Mack LR model. The LR Electric features an ergonomic design, similar to the diesel Mack LR, but with a few changes to the gauges and select switchgear.

The LR Electric will be monitored by Mack GuardDog® Connect, Mack’s proactive telematics solution that monitors vehicle performance and helps customers avoid unplanned downtime. The LR Electric will also be supported by Mack’s extensive dealer network. For more information about the Mack LR Electric, please visit macktrucks.com.

Volvo and Mack Committed to Uptime Support

As always, Volvo Action Service (VAS) is enabling customers to connect with highly trained uptime experts for 24/7 assistance to quickly manage service, connectivity solutions, schedule repairs, and tackle any other issues they experience amid the pandemic to ensure maximized uptime. - Photo: Volvo Trucks

Never before have stocked shelves, road construction projects, and refuse collection been more vital to society than during the global coronavirus pandemic. Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks have risen to the challenge, offering customers consistent uptime support.

Mack OneCall agents, based in Mack’s 24/7 Uptime Center in Greensboro, N.C., have continued to keep customers’ trucks generating revenue as a result of careful preparations occurring long before the pandemic. Personnel from every customer support function work in the Uptime Center, enabling cross-functional teams to quickly and efficiently address customer issues impacting uptime.

Volvo Trucks North America also continues to provide customers with its uptime support amid the current COVID-19 situation. As always, Volvo Action Service (VAS) is enabling customers to connect with highly trained uptime experts for 24/7 assistance to quickly manage service, connectivity solutions, schedule repairs, and tackle any other issues they experience amid the pandemic to ensure maximized uptime.

Recognizing the criticality of ongoing reliable support, both truckmakers strategically planned for conditions that would enable agents and other uptime support employees to work from home so that when and if the time ever came, everyone was adequately prepared.

Mack has made several investments in technology, resources and services to improve uptime for customers, including increased staffing of OneCall agents and improvements to capabilities such as ASIST, Mack’s web-based service management system. Mack Parts Distribution Centers are also up and running, keeping Mack dealers stocked with necessary parts for uptime support.

Mack keeps track of key performance indicators, as well as capturing customer feedback, and has seen positive trends during the past few months.

Mack’s comprehensive suite of uptime services begins at the Mack Uptime Center, where OneCall agents offer support to customers experiencing unplanned and planned service events, including scheduling of service and repairs. Agents also respond to events that are proactively identified through Mack GuardDog® Connect, Mack’s integrated telematics solution. Mack GuardDog Connect is standard on all Mack models equipped with Mack engines.

Mack GuardDog Connect also enables Mack Over The Air, offering remote software updates for powertrain components and vehicle parameters for Mack trucks equipped with 2017 or newer Mack engines. Working with Mack OneCall agents, the updates are scheduled for when it works best for the customer.

Volvo Trucks’ over-the-air services and Remote Programming capabilities increase uptime as updates can be done in a matter of minutes without having to visit a dealership. Remote Diagnostics, which is standard in every Volvo truck, also helps avoid unexpected downtime by monitoring Volvo engines, I-Shift transmissions and aftertreatment systems.

“With COVID-19, it’s more important than ever for trucks to remain on the road, delivering much-needed goods and supplies,” said Conal Deedy, director of customer productivity solutions, Volvo Trucks North America. “During this time, we are committed to offering the same all-day and all-night uptime support for our customers despite modified working conditions. Our Volvo Action Service team is made up of real people, all employees of Volvo Trucks, who offer fast solutions for customers so they can focus on delivering food, medicine and other essential materials needed right now, safely and efficiently.”

Mack Trucks announces a Premium Service Agreement program

Mack Trucks has announced the new Mack Premium Service Agreement, a comprehensive maintenance program that simplifies maintenance management and aims to increase uptime, optimize vehicle safety and performance and improve cost of ownership for Mack Anthem, Mack Pinnacle, Mack Granite, Mack TerraPro and Mack LR customers, the OEM noted during a meeting at the TMC Fall Meeting 2021. The optional Mack Premium Service Agreement may be added to new truck purchases or added to trucks in service prior to their first service interval.

The service agreement replaces Mack’s existing maintenance plans and streamlines maintenance management with a single solution. Customers can tailor the plans to the length of their ownership cycle and to the expected operating duty conditions of the truck – normal duty or heavy duty – optimizing maintenance intervals based on duty cycle, the OEM noted.

Payment options allow customers to pay on a recurring monthly basis or upfront at the time of their truck purchase, billed directly or through their dealer. Offered through Mack Financial Services (MFS), bundling of the Mack Premium Service Agreement with their truck payment gives customers the opportunity to pay for the contract interest-free and over time. Partnering with MFS also gives customers a dedicated financial services partner to provide support throughout the life of the vehicle and service agreement.

The Mack Premium Service Agreement includes a range of services to promote proper vehicle maintenance and peak performance, including:

  • All aftertreatment maintenance and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning;
  • All scheduled transmission and scheduled axle maintenance;
  • All scheduled engine maintenance and valve adjustments;
  • All scheduled chassis maintenance;
  • Alternator coverage; and
  • Regular 74-point inspection and oil analysis.

Customers may also add optional services. Working through Mack’s dealer network in the U.S. and Canada means all repairs and service, including advanced diagnostics and warranty work, can be done at one location by certified Mack technicians.
