New movie theaters coming soon to Macomb Township, Taylor

    • Emagine to open Dec. 19
    • MJR bows out for Southland Center

A new movie theater is coming soon to an old Kroger in Macomb Township as the race to build two theaters near Southland Center in Taylor narrows to a single project.

Emagine Entertainment this week revealed its plan to open a nine-screen, high-end theater Dec. 19 within a former Kroger at Twenty-three Mile Road.

Troy-based Emagine closed on the property in August, and has been busy with a renovation that will more or less fit the multiplex into the grocery store's footprint, said Emagine CEO Paul Glantz. It will be the theater chain's eighth cinema.

"There's no sense building from scratch when you have the ability to repurpose an existing structure," he said Friday.

In Taylor, the Southland Center is on track to get just one new movie theater instead of two.

The mall was the backdrop last summer for dueling efforts: MJR Digital Cinemas sought to put a screen theater inside the old AMC Star Taylor at the same time that Cinemark announced plans for an all-new, screen theater on the site of the mall's former Mervyns store.

But the MJR plan is now canceled.

Dennis Redmer, MJR's vice president of operations, said the company backed out for two main reasons: the surprisingly poor physical condition of the old AMC Star building and the tough competition from Cinemark.

From the outside the AMC Star may look all right, but inside, scrappers have stolen copper plumbing fixtures and stripped the electrical gear.

"It has a massive amount of damage that has been done to it over the years," Redmer said. And then when Cinemark announced they were building just across the street, the investment just didn't justify itself."

Construction of the 50,square-foot Cinemark theater is to start next year and finish by the fall.

The new Emagine theater in Macomb Township will have a liquor license and service cocktails and beer. It also will serve nontraditional movie-house fare such as made-to-order stone oven pizza and frozen desserts.

Glantz, the CEO, said he envisions Emagine Macomb as more of a neighborhood theater than a super-regional draw.

"And I am very happy to own and operate neighborhood theaters," Glantz said. "That's getting back to the roots of the industry, and that's really what we aspire to do with this location."

In a twist, a former Kmart in Roseville on 13 Mile near Little Mack Avenue that Emagine once considered for a screen multiplex has been bought by Kroger, which plans to tear down the building and construct a new grocery store there by , according to news reports.
