The 5 Best Garage Sale Apps to Buy and Sell

Local garage sales are the best way to find great deals on useful items. That whole "One man's trash is another man's treasure" idiom is actually true sometimes. But how do you go about finding one in your area if you don't see a physical yard sign advertising it?

Well nowadays, you can actually find online garage sale apps. One app on our list acts as a virtual garage sale, while the others can help you find local in-person sales and even estate sales in your area.

1. VarageSale

VarageSale helps you connect with local sellers trying to get rid of their "garage sale" items without actually having a garage sale. A lot of items will be listed individually on VarageSale so you can find exactly what you're looking for, connect with the seller, and snag your item.

However, you can find local garage sales as well by simply searching for the term in the app. This will show times and dates of garage sales near you that you can physically show up to and shop at.

And what's unique about VarageSale is that everyone who joins the app goes through a manual review process before they're ever allowed to buy or sell an item. This ensures maximum safety on both the seller's end and the buyer's end.

2. CPlus for Craigslist

Craigslist has always been a great way to find garage sales online. While the Craigslist website has always been easy to navigate, it's also been home to a few sketchy or just plain weird postings.

The CPlus app makes Craigslist even easier to use and navigate classified ads. If you want to look for garage sales in only your city, you can; but you can also look for garage sales in multiple cities nearby and then save this search to your home page.

Then, whenever you're feeling the need to hit up a garage sale, you can just open the app and instantly see search results for garage sales or yard sales near you. And if your goal is to set up a virtual garage sale posting, you can easily do that through CPlus too!

3. Nextdoor

If you live in a housing development, you've surely heard of the Nextdoor app. Nextdoor allows you to connect with your neighbors and find out who's having a garage sale or just selling one or two items.

You can browse through the home page to see what your neighbors are up to or just get right to it and search for garage sales. With each posting, you'll usually find details about what sort of items will be included as well as, of course, the address of the garage sale.

4. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook's Marketplace section is a great way to find garage sales online. Similar to the other apps, all you need to do is search up the term garage sale or yard sale and you'll find a lot of options nearby. Or, if you're looking for a particular item, you can search specifically for that item and not have to go sorting through a ton of garage sale items.

If you do end up meeting someone for a sale of a particular item, make sure you take the proper precautions. Unlike members of VarageSale, Facebook members are not manually reviewed. So be cautious of where you meet someone for an in-person sale and maybe consider taking someone else with you, whether you're buying or selling.

5. Estate Sales

While estate sales are generally a lot larger than your traditional neighborhood garage sale, it's still a great way to find awesome products at a lower price. And if you've never shopped at an estate sale, you're missing out. It's so easy to find a beautiful piece of furniture or home décor; sometimes even easier than at a traditional yard sale.

You can look at a map view of your area and see all scheduled estate sales. When you click on one, it'll give you a ton of information. You'll often see a picture for every item being sold as well as necessary info like the date, time, and place the estate sale will take place. Some estate sales are even fully online.

Score Some Awesome Online Garage Sale Deals

Now that you know the best ways to find garage sales online in your area, it's time to get out there.

With estate sales, you'll often see pictures of the exact items for sale; if this is more up your alley, try out the Estate Sales app. With a garage sale or yard sale app, you may get a brief description of categories for the sale, but you won't know what's there until you get there. There's always a nice air of mystery when going to garage sales.

And if you need to sell your items, you can host a garage sale yourself and promote it on one of these apps. Or, you can also sell your items online through a few different website.

Host a virtual garage sale

Option 1: live stream your garage sale

Example from @hawkeyevintage

Broadcast your garage sale live from home using Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or YouTube. Think of it like your very own TV shopping channel, with you as the host and (let’s be honest) even better because it’s all about your pre-loved stuff.

You can interact with your audience in real time, and show off the items you have for sale in a more personal way. Buyers then just slide into your DM’s to purchase - this is made easier if you have a buddy in the house who can reply to messages and track which items sell in real time while you woo the audience on camera.

Channels to use
: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or YouTube. You could even use virtual hang out spaces more usually reserved for work things like Zoom, Google Meets or Teams.

Best for: Natural Entertainers

Option 2: host a sale in your social media feed

Example from @zazavintagestore

Post your items for sale in your social media feed (Instagram works best). Simples.

Photograph your items ahead of time and then upload them to your feed on sale day. This is a great option for those who aren’t super confident on camera, or who are crunched for time and want to draft their listings in advance. To buy people then just scroll through your feed and comment ‘sold’ on the post purchase. First in best dressed. This method is tried, tested and dependable, and gives you the chance to curate your feed.

Channels to use
: Instagram or Facebook

Best for: Fans Of A Classic

Option 3: host a sale in your Stories

Example from @ohlucette

Like a feed sale, a story sale allows you to photograph your items ahead of time and do all the prep work in advance. Then all you have to do is simply upload those photos to your Instagram or Facebook stories on your event day.

With a quick message people can then purchase your goods, and your items can stay up for 24hrs to give everyone a short window to shop. You still get to interact with people in real time as they’re reaching directly into your DMs and create an exclusive shopping experience, all whilst having the chance to do the prep work ahead of time. It could be considered the best of both a live sale & feed sale.

Channels to use
: Instagram or Facebook

Best for: Sociable & Manageable

Option 4: Link to an online marketplace or other website

If social media is not your thing, you can link your virtual garage sale listing to an online store or marketplace such as eBay, Poshmark, Depop or the Aussie made Rosella Street. It's an environmentally driven marketplace that plants a tree for every sale. Pretty cool, huh?

You still get to be part of all the action, get a bunch of free promotional bits when you register and can take advantage of the web traffic the Garage Sale Trail website gets over the two big weekends.

Read the blog on how to host a virtual sale without social media for more.

Online yard sales, beyond Craigslist

It’s always fun to get new stuff, and even better if you can get what you need for free or at bargain-basement prices. Personally, I also like getting rid of stuff I no longer need. I find I’m more productive and more relaxed in a less-cluttered environment, but I hate creating more garbage. The ideal situation is giving what I no longer need to someone else who can use it. The only thing better is if I can sell it to someone who can use it.

Fortunately, in this world of online everything, plenty of opportunities exist to give, sell, get and buy all kinds of items. The things I’ve seen sold/bought or given/received include furniture, toys, clothes, appliances, books, DVDs, sporting goods, electronics and shoes.

If you’re stuck in the days of Craigslist, it’s time to embrace the modern world of online yard sales and swap sites. Discover the many ways you can buy and sell all kinds of items in your local community or beyond. There are also sites for people who want to give things away for free!

How to give stuff away or get stuff for free

Freecycle.org

Freecycle.org is a great resource started by people interested in keeping stuff out of landfills. There are more than 5,000 groups (usually community-based) around the world. Chances are there are one or more groups near you. I belong to the one for my town as well as two nearby communities. This gives me more opportunities to get things for free and give stuff away. As a mom of two young kids, it’s been an invaluable way to get rid of outgrown toys.

Before you jump into the world of Freecycle, though, brush up on these rules of Freecycle etiquette.

Email loops

Another resource to get and give away free items as well as buy and sell stuff cheap is town email loops. My town has a neighborhood loop that is free to join. Users not only post when they have goods to give away or sell, but they also ask about and recommend new restaurants, local businesses and more. These groups may be run through your town hall or by a private person or group. Try asking around to see if your town has one or check Nextdoor.com. If not, you may want to consider starting one, if you’re tech savvy.

Buy Nothing Facebook groups

For hyper-local swapping and community building, look on Facebook for a local Buy Nothing group. You can only join one, based on your exact home location. The goal of the Buy Nothing Project is to reduce waste and excess consumerism, while creating a bond within the neighborhood as people help each other out by gifting items for free. Some also have traveling boxes for clothes, books, jewelry, puzzles and the like where neighbors borrow from the boxes and add in their own items or return previous loans. Who knows, you might even make a new friend through the transactions?

How to buy and sell online

Facebook and Facebook Marketplace

When it come to buying and selling, there are a number of options. My current favorite is Facebook. Many communities nationwide have Facebook yard sale pages. One easy way to find local ones is to do an online search for “Facebook yard sale” or “Facebook Buy and Sell” with your town’s name. When I tried, I found eight on just the first page of results. In my town, there are two pages, one for just kids’ stuff and the other for everything else. These are closed groups that you need to request to join. I believe that helps keep the posts real and clear of clutter and junk.

You can also use one of Facebook’s most popular features, designed exactly for the purpose of shopping and selling locally. Facebook Marketplace has made it easier than ever to use the social media platform to find hidden gems or sales from local businesses. Shop or sell clothes, electronics, furniture and even apartments.

One of the best parts of these pages is that most people post pictures of their items so you can see what you’re getting. In addition, if you need something, you can post an “in search of” message. You never know what someone may have sitting in their garage, basement or closet. While I have no interest in going through the trouble of holding an actual yard sale, I have no problem snapping a picture and posting it. In fact, in the last two days I’ve sold four old toys that were in good shape and a set of brand-new baking pans I was given as a gift, but don’t need. I made $50, not too shabby for a few minutes of easy work.

Bookoo

Another local buy and sell option is Bookoo. This is basically an online yard sale in hundreds of towns around the world. You can join for free, and if you don’t have an option in your town, it’s easy to request one. Then, encourage your friends to do the same, so the folks at Bookoo see your town is really interested. This is especially big in the military community, but is expanding outside that group quickly.

Letgo and OfferUp

While any of these options can be used on a smartphone, there’s also free apps devoted to buying and selling locally. Letgo and OfferUp will let you post items for sale as well as see what people in your area are selling.
