When I hear the name GMC, I think of trucks &#; its Sierra pickups most specifically, and its Yukon full-size SUVs, which are based off of a truck body.

But let&#;s not forget that GMC still competes in the crossover marketplace too &#; with its midsize Acadia offering, plus the baby of the bunch &#; the GMC Terrain.

The Terrain is getting a bit dated compared to some competitors, but remains in the battlefield in the ever-crowded small SUV/crossover segment. I recently spent some time in a GMC Terrain Denali, and I&#;m back with a full report.

Looks

If I had to use one word to describe the Terrain&#;s design externally, I would say &#;muscular&#; or &#;tough&#;; It&#;s unlike other small SUVs you will see, and that&#;s a good thing, as too many of them look alike. GMC&#;s chrome grille on the Denali trim is so clearly theirs, you&#;ll never mix this vehicle up with any others.

If you reach the top of the trim levels and drive a Denali, you&#;ll find that the interior of the Terrain will not disappoint. More basic models will be a bit more simple, understandable considering the price difference.

The back seat is somewhat roomy, but overall there is less storage space than some of the the Terrain&#;s rivals.

You&#;ll also like the quiet interior, and the vehicle is well-designed inside and out.

Engine, horsepower

It&#;s a tale of two engines on the Terrain.

First, you have a liter 4-cylinder engine available; it will only get you horsepower. This was in the vehicle I tested, and I was disappointed. It struggled to get up to speed, and rarely offered what I would consider a fun drive.

Or, you can upgrade to a V-6 that offers horsepower, which is much better. In fact, I&#;d say everyone should skip the 4-cylinder option.

You&#;ll feel comfy and can tune out road noise in the Terrain due to a suspension aimed at easing your ride as much as possible. But the trade-off from that is less of a sporty feel than some competition, so it&#;s a matter of what is more important to you.

On all versions of the Terrain, front-wheel drive is standard; but you can upgrade to all-wheel drive on everything except the base model.

Technology, safety

While the look of the interior electronics in the Terrain remains a bit old-school, thankfully the technology is catching up inside and almost all the usual tech/safety features offered on the competition are available here too. The 7-inch display offers virtual buttons to control audio, climate and other features, but physical buttons also are offered (and are sometimes easier to use than the virtual ones).

The GMC IntelliLink system lets you stream audio in the vehicle. Blind-spot monitoring and other safety features that I view as critical are options. Standard features include: Rearview camera, the very helpful OnStar system, WiFi hotspot capability, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio.

Options as you move up trim levels include: heated exterior mirrors, all-wheel drive; LED daytime running lights, automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth audio, and compatibility with Pandora and Stitcher smartphone apps. Once you reach Denali level, you are getting an even more comfortable suspension.

MPG

Fuel mileage on the AWD Terrain I tested is listed at 16 city/23 highway/18 combined). The front-wheel drive version is estimated at 22 city/32 highway.

Price

My test vehicle featured the Denali makeover and cost just over $41,; the Denali&#;s base price started just over $35K. The most basic model Terrain comes in at $23,, and the trim lines include SL, SLE-1, SLE-2, SLT and Denali. &#; Toward the lower end, these prices are competitive, but as they grow it&#;s a harder sell for GMC in a segment with so many strong options (everyone and their mother is making a small SUV these days).

Bottom line

If you opt for the better engine, you might get some better enjoyment out of the Terrain than I did in terms of overall driving experience. And regardless of engine choice, anyone who chooses the Denali trim level on a GMC Terrain will be loving how it looks both outside and in, and will appreciate the overall feel and look of the vehicle.

Don&#;t get me wrong, there are a lot of compact SUV options out there that will likely draw people away from the Terrain, but I currently see a lot of Terrains on the road and don&#;t anticipate that changing anytime soon, as it should remain a popular choice in the segment.

It’s the GMC Terrain we’re driving this week, arriving with AWD underpinnings in top line Denali trim. As a sibling to Chevy’s Equinox, these compact to mid-size SUVs are not just selling like hot cakes, they’re also receiving some excellent consumer ownership reviews which no doubt makes pleases to no end the folks at General Motor.   

 

New for is an upgraded exterior design that is much to my liking. Terrain now features a new hood, redesigned front and rear fascia, chrome accents and new three-bar front grille design with the distinctive GMC red badge.

 

In my opinion, Terrain is better looking than the sibling Chevy Equinox, especially the hood and rear of the B-pillar window design. The Equinox also receives a style enhancement, but the GMC is more muscular than the Equinox motif. (Note: mechanically and safety wise, these two vehicles are identical twins so it’s a matter of aesthetics. Many may like the Chevy better).

 

Our Terrain Denali came with just about every option available, pushing the final price to $41, with $ delivery included. However, there’s always a lesser priced model to choose from, as the entry level front Terrain SL starts at just $23, well-equipped. This allows most all potential GMC Terrain consumers a wide price range to work with. The entry AWD model is the SLE-1, which starts at $29, while the Denali AWD starts at $35, and is the top model available.

 

Notable is that all GMC Terrains deliver four and five star safety features and identical mechanicals be it an SL or the SLT Denali. Included are 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, hill start assist, Stabilitrak with traction control and much more. Our Denali includes forward collision alert, side blind alert, rear cross traffic in addition to the standard safety features of advanced air bag systems and rear safety camera.

 

Our tester featured the $1, option horsepower liter V6, which delivers way more go-power yet still generates acceptable EPA ratings at 16 city and 23 highway for an AWD model. Combined with a $ trailer tow package, the V6 Terrain allows for a 3, lb. tow capacity, which is 2, pounds more than the four-cylinder Terrain. 

 

All GMC Terrains, even the Denali, come standard with a horse liter Ecotec four-cylinder that produces 22 city and 32 highway in front drive mode and 20 city and 29 highway in AWD design. This is excellent fuel mileage and results from GMC’s variable valve train enhancements and the proven six-speed automatic transmission with fuel saving ECO mode. Therefore, if you don’t need horses and the added towing capacity, test drive the four cylinder Terrain first to insure you’re making the correct decision.

 

Our Denali’s cabin features heated seats and lots of head and legroom considering it’s a small SUV. Notable standard items include a Pioneer Premium eight-speaker stereo with subwoofer, power front seats, a sliding 60/40 rear seat with three position recline, illuminated Denali sill plates, 4G Wi-Fi ready abilities, automatic climate control, power lift gate, cruise, Color Touch seven-inch touch screen radio with Sirius/XM, USB, Bluetooth, and much more. As for storage Terrain features from cu. ft. of cargo space with second row up to cubic feet with seats down. Additionally, the second row seats now fold flat, unlike earlier models.

 

Terrain features an automatic AWD system that’s ready for any and all road conditions and/or inclement weather. On the highway GMC Terrain is nimble and plants well in the turns thanks to standard inch tires on Denali specific aluminum wheels. Our Denali, however, came with inch Hankook tires and special aluminum Denali wheels. The final options were a $ power sunroof, $ cargo package, $ cargo closeout panel, $ navigation and $ Iridium silver metallic paint. 

 

Important numbers include a wheelbase of inches, gallon fuel tank, 40 ft. turn radius, and inch ground clearance and a 4, pound curb weight.

 

Built in Ontario, Canada, GMC Terrain is a good looking and well built small SUV. I recommend testing the front drive models first if you live in a warm climate, and then move up to the higher priced SLE or SLT models based on your economic situation. This suggestion all reverts back to return on investment and depreciation, as the lower priced Terrain front-drive can find a home in your driveway for $23, retail and may be your best buy overall.

GMC Terrain Compact SUV Gets Facelift

General Motors is updating its GMC Terrain compact SUV for with a new look and is offering safety features on the SLE and SLT models for the first time, GM has announced.

The Terrain will debut at the New York International Auto Show later this week.

Updates to the Terrain, which is built on a similar platform as the Chevrolet Equinox, are mostly cosmetic and include new front and rear fascia; chrome-accented grille designs for SLE, SLT and Denali; a power dome hood; LED daytime running lamps and higher trims; inch aluminum wheels on non-Denali models; inch aluminum wheels on Denali; and revised trims such as SL, SLE (SLE-1 and SLE-2), SLT, and Denali.

New safety options include Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert on SLE and SLT that were previously available only on Denali.

There are currently lots of fresh players in the white-hot compact-crossover segment. The GMC Terrain, however, is not one of them, having changed little since its debut in as the smallest of the truck brand’s “Professional Grade” vehicles. While we expect a more compact and efficient redesign to appear within the next year or so, the current Terrain—and its Chevrolet Equinox platform-mate—soldiers into its seventh year of production well past its sell-by date.

Despite some minor updates, the Terrain largely remains the same as the model that finished sixth in an eight-vehicle comparison test back in The range stretched for when the top-end Denali model was added to the lineup, and an optional hp liter V-6 ($) was added at the same time. Front-wheel drive and a wheezy hp liter four-cylinder remain standard, and you can opt for all-wheel drive for an additional $ But newer competitors—such as the latest Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and Mazda CX-5—all easily surpass the GMC in terms of refinement, execution, and drivability.

King Chrome

To update its appearance, GMC has given the latest Terrain a taller, contoured grille with even more chrome, as well as LED daytime running lights, a bulging “power dome” hood, and revised front and rear bumpers with additional shiny bits. The look is still overtly chunky, but with a softer, less industrial mien. Buyers of the premium model like our V-6 AWD test vehicle can revel in its glitzy façade, the plethora of Denali badges, and unique “smoked mahogany” wood trim.

The interior also receives a few updates, as well as some new optional equipment that was previously Denali-specific. The central, seven-inch touch-screen interface now has sharper graphics, but the display is relatively small and far away from the driver, and the surrounding controls are tiny and haphazardly arranged. A 4G LTE OnStar connection, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple’s Siri Eyes Free connectivity are included. Our example added the optional navigation system with GMC’s IntelliLink for $

But none of the updates improve the Terrain’s subpar fit-and-finish and messy ergonomics. Large swaths of hard plastics with sharp edges and vast panel gaps litter the cabin. And the pixilated, red-hued information screen in the instrument cluster looks like something out of an old Coleco video game. Despite the Denali’s premium price point, it’s missing some expected amenities—such as keyless ignition, auto-up windows, and dual-zone climate control—found in newer entry-level compacts. At least the Denali does come standard with remote start, a premium Pioneer audio system, and a multitude of driver aids (forward-collision, lane-departure, blind-spot, and rear cross-traffic alerts).

Move Along Now

Our test vehicle’s performance at the track was respectable but not enjoyable. The dash to 60 mph takes seconds, with the quarter-mile passing in seconds at 94 mph—comparable to the times we’ve recorded from more luxurious compact crossovers from Germany. The GMC’s V-6, however, is coarse and unpleasant in day-to-day driving, with a torque peak that arrives relatively high in the rev range ( lb-ft at rpm), which necessitates significant throttle work to get moving. This is not the same sonorous and heavily re-engineered liter in the new Chevrolet Camaro V The Terrain’s standard six-speed automatic adds to the racket as it fumbles for the correct ratio and holds onto gears way too long before upshifting. Fuel economy also was disappointing: Our observed figure of 16 mpg in mixed driving was 1-mpg lower than that of the last Chevrolet Tahoe 4x4 we tested.

The pound Terrain’s foot stop from 70 mph and g of lateral grip are solid efforts, but there’s nothing dynamic about the way the GMC drives. The steering is lifeless and rather heavy, and our example, with inch wheels ($) and Hankook Optimo all-season tires, could easily be coaxed into howling understeer. The one mechanical distinction for the Denali version continues to be its standard dual-mode dampers, which provide adequate body control in corners while still delivering an acceptable ride over broken pavement.

While the base Terrain SL carries a $24, MSRP for , you’ll need an additional 10 grand to step up to the glittering Denali. And our example’s bottom line swelled to an eye-watering $41, with the V-6, all-wheel drive, a power sunroof ($), the trailering package ($), and several other options. Despite its age, however, the Terrain remains GMC’s second-best seller after the full-size Sierra pickup, a testament to how many people purchase in this segment. So we can’t fault the brand too much for taking its time replacing it. But splurging for the fanciest version’s added tinsel strikes us as a sour deal.

NEW YORK (Tuesday, March 31, ) – Distinguished by a new, more contemporary front-end appearance, the GMC Terrain and Terrain Denali were introduced today, ahead of their public debut at the New York International Auto Show.

The Terrain lineup features new front and rear fascias, new grille designs, a power dome hood, light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and additional updates. Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are offered on SLE and SLT models for the first time.

Terrain at a glance

The Terrain seats five, with all-wheel drive offered on SLE, SLT and Denali models. Its interior – with the GM-exclusive MultiFlex sliding rear seat – offers litres ( cubic feet) of cargo space behind the rear seat and 1, litres ( cubic feet) with the rear seat folded. 

The standard Ecotec L direct-injected engine delivers is expected to deliver fuel consumption estimate of L/km highway (FWD models). A direct-injected L V-6 is available and delivers best-in-class horsepower ( kW) and lb-ft of torque ( Nm). The V-6 engine also enables a trailering capacity of up to 1, kilograms (3, pounds).

Available GMC IntelliLink offers OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the car is on and comes with a three-month/3GB data trial (whichever comes first).

Terrain also offers a programmable power liftgate (standard on Denali, available on SLT), with a memory function that stops the liftgate at a chosen height to help shorter drivers or accommodate low garage heights.

Terrain Denali

Dual-flow dampers are exclusive to the Terrain Denali’s suspension system, providing a smoother ride and improved handling by controlling suspension dampening across a broader range of driving conditions.

Denali-exclusive touches such as contrast stitching, along with a soft-touch instrument panel and leather-wrapped steering wheel with smoked mahogany wood accents, contribute to a luxurious interior.

Dual-flow dampers are exclusive to the Terrain Denali’s suspension system and provide a smoother ride and improved handling by controlling suspension dampening across a broader range of driving conditions.

Exceptional safety features on the Terrain Denali include the standard Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning systems, which use a single-camera crash-avoidance system to visually and audibly warn drivers when a collision is imminent or the vehicle crosses a lane marker. The Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, also standard, use radar technology to watch spots the driver may not be able to see and provide visible and audible warnings to help avoid collisions.

With the touch of a button, Terrain Denali drivers can access several convenience features, such as a programmable power liftgate, which allows access to the vehicle’s cubic feet (1, liters) of cargo space behind the first row, while a memory function stops the liftgate at a chosen height to help shorter drivers or accommodate low garage heights. Other technology available on Terrain Denali includes color touch navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Terrain interior features
Inside the Terrain’s spacious cabin, premium interior features have been designed with high standards of functionality and materials that exude a commanding and structured feel.

The standard and segment-exclusive MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft nearly 8 inches ( mm), providing increased passenger comfort – including inches (1,mm) of legroom – or greater rear cargo capacity, while the 60/split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo. The rear cargo area offers cubic feet ( liters) of storage, as well as one of the Terrain’s four auxiliary power outlets.

Additional interior features include:

  • Automatic climate control is standard on SLE-2, SLT and Denali
  • Heated cloth seats are standard on SLE-2; and heated, leather-trimmed seats are standard on SLT and Denali
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls is standard on SLE-2, SLT and Denali
  • Color touch radio with seven-inch touch-screen display, USB and auxiliary inputs is standard on SLE, SLT and Denali
  • Color touch navigation radio is available on SLE-2, SLT and Denali
  • Premium Pioneer sound system with subwoofer and amplifier is standard on SLE-2, SLT and Denali
  • Ambient lighting around the door handles, center console and cup holders is standard on all models
  • Tilting and telescoping steering column is standard on all models
  • Driver eight-way power-adjustable seat is standard on SLE-2, SLT and Denali
  • Front passenger eight-way power-adjustable seat offered on SLT and standard on Denali

Interior color choices for include Jet Black, Light Titanium and Brownstone, along with new Saddle Up, which is offered exclusively on SLT. Terrain Denali is offered in Jet Black and new Light Titanium/Jet Black.

IntelliLink and OnStar 4G LTE
GMC IntelliLink is offered on SLE, SLT and Denali. It combines with OnStar to bring segment-exclusive infotainment technology to Terrain at a time when more and more consumers are buying smartphones. IntelliLink extends the OnStar experience from safety and security to information and entertainment by seamlessly integrating the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that hand-held phones may be safely stowed while driving.

Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free features aid drivers with the latest in technology. With Text Messaging Alerts, the driver can be alerted to new messages and can have them read aloud, view and respond to them (functionality depends on the smartphone). Siri Eyes Free enables iPhone4S and later users to access Siri via the steering wheel controls and check calendar entries, have text messages read and respond to them, place calls or call up music.

Android phone users can also use the steering wheel controls to access their phone’s voice recognition features.  

Additional IntelliLink features include:

  • Hands-free voice control system powered by Nuance®, which allows simple voice commands to initiate phone calls and select radio stations or media from portable MP3 players and smartphones. 
  • Pandora Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio allow users to create personalized radio stations based on favorite artists or genres. IntelliLink integrates control of both of these apps for a driver-directed listening experience. 
  • Gracenote® identifies the music collection on the driver’s USB device, MP3 player or smart phone and presents information such as artist name, genres and album cover art on the IntelliLink screen. 
  • USB connectivity adds the ability to play music files directly from flash memory devices, and gives the customer the ability to update IntelliLink with future enhancements.

GMC’s Color Touch navigation radio features a touch-screen control that incorporates all of the IntelliLink features and more. It is available on SLE-2, SLT models and Terrain Denali. SiriusXM Satellite Radio (with three-month trial period) is standard on all models.  

Complementing IntelliLink to enhance Terrain’s connectivity is new OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial.

4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G and times faster than the previous generation of OnStar hardware. And with OnStar, it also offers stronger, broader coverage than smartphones on the same network and it’s easy to use: If the vehicle is on, the connection is on.

At the time of purchase, six months of OnStar Guidance plan includes all of OnStar’s advisor-based safety and security features, including Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.

Five years of OnStar Basic Plan includes RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allowing owners to remotely start and lock/unlock a car (if properly equipped), and activate the horn and lights from anywhere with a data connection. It also includes OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, which runs monthly checks of a vehicle’s engine, transmission, anti-lock brakes and more, and Dealer Maintenance Notification, which sends diagnostic report directly to a preferred dealer to simplify service scheduling.

Powertrain details
GMC Terrain’s standard Ecotec L engine and available L V-6 feature fuel-saving direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. The L delivers horsepower ( kW) with an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 32 mpg (FWD models).

The L is rated at horsepower ( kW) and lb-ft of torque ( Nm) and uses lightweight components that contribute to the Terrain’s fuel efficiency while boosting horsepower. An integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design saves about 13 pounds compared to a non-integrated design, while a composite intake manifold saves about pounds vs. an aluminum intake. Additionally, a lightweight structural front cover and high-strength connecting rods save additional weight.

An efficient six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models and an “Eco” transmission mode on L-equipped models alters shift points to improve fuel economy.

Chassis and suspension
Terrain engineers have ensured a smooth, quiet ride by building on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. The strong structure supports a four-wheel independent suspension system that – with a long, inch (2, mm) wheelbase and wide front and rear tracks – contributes to car-like ride and handling traits. The long wheelbase and wide tracks reduce body roll for a more stable driving experience.

Additional features include:

  • Rack-mounted ZF Steering Systems electric power steering gear on L-equipped models; hydraulic power rack-and-pinion steering on L Vequipped models
  • Available all-wheel drive
  • Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control helps keep the vehicle in its intended path in the event of an emergency maneuver
  • Standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes with traction control.

Safety and crash-avoidance features
Superior safety features are a cornerstone attribute of the GMC Terrain. Built on a solid structure that includes strategic applications of high-strength steel to protect occupants in the event of a crash, the Terrain is equipped with several safety components to avoid crashes or protect occupants in the event of one, including:

  • Six standard air bags including dual frontal air bags, head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
  • Standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control and rollover mitigation.
  • Standard rear-vision camera that helps drivers identify objects behind the vehicle
  • Standard tire pressure monitoring system.

Additionally, active safety features alert the driver to potential crash threats. They’re standard on Denali and offered on SLE-2 and SLT models in two Driver Alert Packages:

  • Driver Alert Package 1 includes Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist
  • Driver Alert Package 2 (requires Driver Alert Package #1) includes Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning.
