AMD Radeon R7 (Bristol Ridge)

Die AMD Radeon R7 (Bristol Ridge) ist eine integrierte Grafikeinheit der schnellsten mobiler AMD Carrizo-APUs. Zum Launch kommt die R7 z.B. im Topmodell FXP mit GCN-Shadereinheiten und MHz Grafiktaktrate zum Einsatz. Technisch unterscheidet sich die GPU nicht von der AMD Radeon R7 in Carrizo, jedoch wird sie um bis zu MHz höher getaktet. Je nach verbauter Kühllösung und damit konfiguriertem TDP ( Watt) kann die Leistung sich deutlich unterscheiden.  Ausserdem hängt die Leistung stark vom verbauten Hauptspeicher ab (beste Leistung mit Dual-Channel DDR4).

Architektur und Features

Die Radeon R7 bietet laut AMD acht Kerne der dritten GCN Generation (in der Presse oft als GCN oder bezeichnet). Damit ist sie sehr ähnlich zu dem Tonga Desktop Chip und bietet DirectX 12 (FL 12_0) Hardware-Support. Weiters können auch per Mantle, OpenGL und OpenCL die Grafikkerne angesprochen werden. Außerdem unterstützt die Grafikkarte den HSA Standard und kann damit effizient in Verbindung mit den CPU Kernen genutzt werden.

Im Vergleich zur Kaveri-Generation (Kaveri R7 mit GCN ) verhilft vor Allem die neue Farbkomprimierung für eine bessere Speicherausnutzung und führt dadurch zu einer % höheren Performance in Spielen.

Die überarbeitete Videoeinheit Carrizos/Bristol Ridge beinhaltet den UVD 6 (Unified Video Decoder) welcher erstmals HVEC / H und 4K vollständig in Hardware dekodieren kann. Performance

Durch den konfigurierbaren TDP der Kaveri Chips von 12 bis 45 Watt können erhebliche Leistungsunterschiede bei Spielen entstehen. Insgesamt sind leicht bessere Ergebnisse als bei der Carrizo Radeon R7 durch den höheren Takt bei vergleichbaren Modellen zu erwarten. Generell kann man jedoch die Kaveri R7 Seite für eine Performanceeinschätzung und Spieleleistung nutzen.

Leistungsaufnahme

Je nach konfiguriertem TDP (cTDP) ist der in 28nm gefertigte Chip mit 12 bis 45 Watt spezifiziert. Damit eignet er sich sowohl für den Einsatz in schlanken und leichten Notebooks als auch mittelgroßen Geräten oder All in Ones (AiO).

The AMD Radeon R7 (Kaveri) is an integrated DirectX 12 graphics card found on a number of AMD Kaveri APUs. Depending on the APU model, the GPU can offer all GCN shaders and 8 compute cores, such as on the FXP. Alternatively, other APUs may only feature shaders and 6 compute cores, such as on the FX Additionally, the maximum core clock and memory speeds of the GPU depend on the overarching APU: While the ULV models are limited to DDR, the standard voltage models can support up to DDR

Architecture and Features

Thanks to the new GCN architecture, the Kaveri GPUs are significantly more efficient with higher performance compared to its VLIW-based predecessors Richland and Trinity. The graphics card can now handle both DirectX 12 (FL 12_0) and the AMD Mantle API. The GPU is also able to accelerate various applications like Adobe Photoshop by utilizing OpenCL.

The revised video engine of Kaveri includes UVD (Unified Video Decoder) and VCE (Video Codec Engine). H codec support has been slightly improved in several areas. However, H is still not fully supported in hardware.

Performance

Due to significant differences in shader count, core clock speed, and memory support between various Radeon R7 models, the performance of the Radeon R7 can vary greatly between different APUs. While the fastest GPU version in the FXP can compete with a dedicated GeForce GT M, the slower version in the FX only performs at the level of a GeForce GT M or HD Graphics In some cases, the relatively weak CPU may limit the framerates.

Accordingly, games of can be played fluently in low to medium settings at x or x pixels.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of the entire Kaveri APU is rated at 19 Watts and 35 Watts for ULV and standard voltage models, respectively. Thus, the 28 nm chip is suited for smaller or medium sized (sub-)notebooks.

AMD Radeon R7 M

The Radeon R7 M is an entry-level graphics card for laptops. It is based on the same chip as the old Radeon R7 M (and therefore renamed M) but features faster GDDR5 graphics memory. Although the core speed is slightly reduced, compared to the M, the general performance is clearly better. On average the gaming performance should be similar to a Nvidia GeForce M (or MX with DDR3).

The Radeon R7 M is produced in 28 nm and still based on an old GCN chip (no new Polaris architecture).
